Cry the Children"My son, he's...he's been reduced to this. Little more than an animal. Oh, gods, my poor boy!"The Story In the sleepy town of Jason's Cross is a secret. For several years now, the local ruling council has been paying protection money to a powerful necromancer who moved in and threatened them should they refuse to pay him a yearly tribute. (It's a classic protection racket.) Now, the council has kept this a secret from the townsfolk, unwilling as they are to admit their weakness or to jeopardize possible trade with other cities who may not wish to do business with ones who traffic with necromancers. However, they have finally decided to stand their ground, to not pay the necromancer his due...and they will pay a price for it. The necromancer approached the council and told them that should they not pay, he would steal away the council member's children and hold their spirits hostage until he was given his tribute. Still, the council refused. Thus, the necromancer has begun to spirit away the children and pull their souls from their tiny bodies. The spirits he keeps in a crystalline prison within his tower. Now, the necromancer, while evil, is a man of his word and will return the children's spirits once he gets what he wants. But, the townsfolk make a dire decision. Rather than simply pay him the money, they have decided to kill their own kin, even though they have been informed by a priest that the spirits can be recovered, and deny him the use of the children as bargaining chips. Keep in mind that the children look like some awful, undead when returned to their families after having their spirits removed, skin pale and eyes vacant. They are not actually undead, but neither are they living. That which made them who they are is gone. Therefore, they react as an animal in great pain would, wailing and searching mindlessly for an end to the agony. |
