This is, perhaps, one of the nastier spells which have been passed along to me by a druid companion. The material component, a handful of seeds, becomes a deadly weapon as the druid causes them to grow...inside the victim of the spell!

The caster flings the handful of seeds at the victim as he chants the verbal component and must make a successful hit in order for the spell to work. When the seeds hit, they penetrate the skin and begin to work their way deep into the victim's flesh. Over the next few, agonizing minutes, the seeds sprout and grow, pushing stalks, leaves and roots out into the victim's body. For each round the spell is in effect, the victim takes damage as the plants grow through their flesh, filling veins and piercing organs. After the first 5 rounds, there is a 20% chance that a plant blocks a vital artery, causing the victim to drop unconscious as precious blood is cut off from vital organs. Once unconscious, death is imminent as he continues to take damage each round due to the blockage.

The amount of damage the seeds do depends entirely upon what species of plant is being used. I would use a sliding scale, as follows:

  • 1d4/round: grasses, flowers, weeds (daisies, ragweed, arrowroot, etc.)
  • 1d6/round: vines (ivy, trumpetvine, sawvine, etc.)
  • 1d8/round: shrubs (holly, spicebush, huckleberry, etc.)
  • 1d10/round: trees (walnuts, almonds, maple, etc.)

If the victim makes a Fortitude save, the seeds simply fail to pierce the skin and fall to the ground where they quickly sprout.

Though a very rare spell, those druids who do have this one are quite fond of it. Quite frankly, it is a convenient way to speed along the forest's growth. Simply start a few plants in the body of your victim and they quickly grow, as fertilizer has already been supplied. The body disappears in a few days as the plants continue to grow through it and forest creatures munch on what is left above ground.
