A Death by the Lake

"Seems the body of a man turned up at the lake a few days ago. People are a mite disturbed by it. Not that anyone knew the man - didn't know him from Elminster, myself. He just dropped in for an ale and mentioned something about hunting a creature of some kind. He also mentioned the lake. Now, there is a legend about something living there, but it's all been good news, like food turning up for the hungry or a drowning man dragged to shore. Not that it is true, mind you. Of course, he leaves for the lake and two days later he turns up dead."

The Story
The legend of the lake is one of lucky happenstances, such as a drowning man turning up on shore or hungry folk suddenly finding a bucket of fresh fish at their campsite after a fruitless day of hunting. The force behind this luck is a half-dragon (half-bronze) by the name of Nola. She has outlived all of her true friends and found her days of adventuring to be over, simply because she grows tired of the constant battle. After many years of wandering, she found the lake, and having a great love of water, decided to explore it's depths. There she discovered a submerged cave that opened up to a cavern beneath the cliffs to the north. Finding it to her liking, she decided to make it her home.

During her day, Nola had her own sense of flair. Most of the time, she used a ring to disguise herself as a human, however she found it sometimes quicker and easier to drop the disguise and simply intimidate her foes into complying with her wishes. Those she left alive (which were most. Unless they pulled something incredibly stupid, she would leave them battered but essentially uninjured) began to spread tales of a horrid, demon-bred woman who stalked the realms. A wizard has trailed these rumors over the last few years and found them to lead straight to her lake. While being a very intelligent man, he is a tad short on the wisdom end of the stick. Instead of sending a scout ahead to plumb the depths of the problem (so to speak) he hired hunters to track and kill her. Needless to say, she hasn't been too pleased about this. In a bout of stubbornness, she decided to not abandon her home just because some half-wit, annoying, parchment pusher has decided to kill her. The body that turned up on the shore is that of the hunter and bodies will continue to pile up as long as he continues to send hunters.

A note of interest: Normally, she kills by simply holding the unfortunate under water until they drown. Since she can breath water, it provides a very convenient and easily explained death. Unfortunately, the hunter was a skilled warrior and fought well. In the fray, she clawed him, leaving a set of rends - one of 5 fingers, one of 4. Earlier in her career, she had run afoul of a cursed ring which she could only get rid of by cutting off her own ring finger. Thus, the differences in the claw marks.
