Welcome to the Tower!

The Kobold Opera

"Very strange, it is. Lately, there has been no game to hunt in the forest surrounding the village. Also, one of the villagers says he heard an awful keening wail coming from the forest, but you can't believe him. He likes to have a touch of the bitter every once in awhile, if you catch my meaning."

The Story
The explanation for this is really very simple, though rather bizarre. A couple of weeks before this all began, a young bard had been traveling along the eastern road when he was accosted by a group of kobolds. While he was in no true danger, he had no heart to hurt the poor, misguided monsters. So, he entertained them with stories of kobold cunning and bravery. (He had a vivid and wild imagination). The kobolds decided to keep him prisoner for awhile and allow him to live so long as he continued to tell them these wondrous tales. After listening to an opera altered to fit the kobold vision of the world, the bard's captors slept and the bard slipped quietly away.

The kobolds were not very happy to discover that their entertainment had crept away in the middle of the night. However, the leader of the group had been inspired. Yes, indeed, his clan would become more cultured. Yes! They would have their very own opera right there in the forest! So, he set about raiding local caravans which came through, taking any food as well as anything which might work as part of a costume. Now, on one of these raids, the pack acquired a lovely brass horn. Of course, none of them knew how to play it, but they weren't all that worried about the little details. The took it all back to their den where they promptly began working on their opera. They practiced and practiced for weeks to perfect their timing and movements. Indeed, it was a great kobold endeavor.

Now, the bad part of this is that the brass horn they found is actually a magical item which repulses all normal creatures. In effect, it creates an area approximately 1 mile in diameter which is devoid of animal life. No birds, no deer, no insects, no fish . . nada. The effects wear off in about a day, but they've been practicing with the horn every day, thus perpetuating the condition. The awful wailing the villager heard? Why, that would be the kobold music.
