Welcome to the Tower!

Poor Man's Lightning Bolt, created by Abatis Treefaller

Kicking away a pile of papers that had been blocking the item from view, you find a brass handpump. It's actually of quite impressive workmanship, and you find yourself wondering at whether it is of dwarven or gnomish design. After a moment, you decide that it must be gnomish. After all, they have a much greater love of such gew-gaws than do the practical dwarves.

The wizard Alcathor designed this artifact. Nice guy, but he never became rich enough to afford the really DECENT spell components...

The Poor Man's Lightning Bolt is a long brass tube with a tapered end on one side and a long pole attached to the back that can be pushed into and out of the tube. Pushing the pole IN causes everything in the tube to be expelled with some force due to the tapered end, and pulling the pole OUT causes air and/or liquid to be sucked in. It's a basic brass pump.

The fun begins when it gets pumped full of water. When the water gets pumped out again a level 1 Shocking Hands spell goes off with it. This does not affect the user (just as if he cast it himself), but anybody who gets splashed gets electrocuted. Although the Shocking Hands spell does not deal as much damage as a lightning bolt, it can spread the damage across any number of targets for as long as the water supply (and the guy pumping it) holds out.
