River of Tears

"I'm lonely. Come play with me."

The Story
The Shrondov family wasn't always wealthy. They did not always dwell in a large, fine home by the riverside. In fact, it has only been in the last few years that they experienced a lucky windfall of cash in the form of an inheritance from a distant relative which was then wisely invested. No. Once, long ago, the Shrondov family was poor. In fact, the family was so poor that they lived in a shack that would've been shameful to even keep livestock in. They could barely afford the necessaties of life, and the eldest of their sons had taken to theft to try and feed himself and his siblings. During that fateful time, Mrs. Shrondov became pregnant with her fifth child, a child that the family would not be able to support. She agonized for the entire nine months of the pregnancy, wondering where the food would come from, how they would cloth and care for the child. When the time came and the child entered the world a healthy, baby boy, she took him to the river and held him under the water until he drowned. Then, crying in shame and horror, she let the tiny body float away.

Now, years later, this same family is well to do, easily supporting themselves. Mrs. Shrondov even gave birth to another son after their great fortune. However, there is one being that has not forgotten the death by the river and will never forgive it - the Shrondov's dead son, reborn into this world as a rusalka. Even now, he lurks about the river's edge, watching in rage and jealousy as his living siblings romp and play. But, more than any others, he hates the child that was born after him, the boy who stole the life that should've been his. The rusalka begins to take his revenge by luring each of his siblings to the river's edge over the course of weeks, drowning them, depriving them of life in the same manner that he was...and he will save the youngest until last for that one shall be the sweetest. What could be more lovely than leaving his brothers' and sisters' bodies face down in the river for his treacherous and hateful mother to find?

No one knows of what Mrs. Shrondov did. She was careful to make sure that everyone believed that she miscarried, even her own husband, for there was no way to hide her protruding belly during the pregnancy. She is also sure that no one would condone her murder, no matter how desperate she was at the time.

To make the game even more poignant and horrific, what the DM may wish to do is re-work the rusalka a bit to make it so that he is somehow trapping his sibling's spirits in the river. That way, each time someone walks down to the spot where they were killed, there is a chance that when they look down into the water, they will see the terrified child floating just beneath the water's surface, mouth open and eyes wide in shock and pain as it gasps it's last breath before dying. Then, the image fades to nothing...
